World’s health sector shows job gains—for now

    The health sector was one of the few to show a rise in employment last year in the midst of the worst global recession in 80 years, says a report from the International Labour Organization.

    A survey of 56 rich and developing nations found that more than 1.6 million jobs were added to the health sector in the third quarter of 2009, up by about 3% from the same quarter in the previous year.

    In the same period more than 20 million jobs were lost overall. Manufacturing was the hardest hit, with the loss of 9.4 million jobs, a decline of 8%.
