Ruth Perrott was born on 5 September 1925 in Bandon, County Cork. Her early life was shaped by tragedy. Her parents died from tuberculosis when she was 2, and she was adopted by her aunt and uncle. Unconventionally for a woman from southern Ireland at that time, she chose to study medicine, and in 1943 was accepted into Trinity College Dublin. She was one of only a handful of women in a male dominated college, and was not allowed to dine or socialise with her fellow male students. She graduated in 1948, and fully qualified …
