Doctors’ leaders have reacted angrily to proposals that around 30 000 NHS hospital beds in England should be closed to save money and improve patient care.
The radical proposal came in a report published on 17 March by public services and economic think tank Reform, which believes much of the overall deficit in the public sector is caused by increased spending on the NHS in recent years.
The report says that the NHS has overinvested in the wrong facilities and far more care could and should be provided in the community hence the need to reduce the number of hospital beds by around a third …
