US pain expert faces prison after pleading guilty to research fraud

    Scott Reuben, an anaesthesiologist and former head of the pain clinic at Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, Massachusetts, and author of 21 papers published over 15 years, has been convicted in the Federal District Court of falsifying medical research studies.

    Dr Reuben will be sentenced on 24 May. He faces penalties of 10 years in prison, followed by two years of supervision after release, and $250 000 (£170 000; €185 000) in fines. Baystate Medical Center asked journals to retract his papers.
