Elizabeth Susan Bye (née Ridgway) was born in Northampton on 2 February 1970, but only six weeks after her birth the family moved to Rowney Green in Worcestershire, where she spent all her childhood.
From 4 years old she was educated at Edgbaston High School for Girls. She excelled in art, English literature, and playing the piano. Despite this, she had wanted for many years to read medicine so, after gaining straight As at O level, she opted for science A levels. A year into these she was appointed head girl, but it was now that she saw that life wasn’t just about studying. Swapping the glasses for contact lenses and having a few ’80s perms, Elizabeth found that her grades fell short of those that were anticipated.
