At University College Hospital Medical School Bernard was awarded the Goldsmid Entrance Scholarship in 1936 and the Liston Gold Medal for Surgery in 1938. After qualifying and the outbreak of the second world war he volunteered as a lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1939.
