David Henry Edwards was born in Sutton, Surrey, and won a scholarship to King’s College School Wimbledon. He gained an open exhibition to Balliol College, Oxford, in 1955 to study medicine. Following house jobs in Oxford, he worked in Birmingham, London, and Wessex before returning to the Radcliffe Infirmary and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre as …
