Lindsay Henderson was born in Stepps, near Glasgow, on 1 April 1924, and was brought up there and in Edinburgh, where he went to university in 1941 and graduated in 1946. After being president of the University Union and playing rugby for the team that beat a combined Oxford and Cambridge team in 1946, he did his national service as medical officer to the 1st Battalion of the Parachute Regiment in Germany.
