US government increases funds to local health centres: The US Department of Health and Human Services has announced nearly $26m (£16m; €18m) in grants to boost services at 180 health centres that served more than 17 million “medically underserved” people in 2008. The health and human services secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, said that the grants were especially important at a time when 14.5 million people are unemployed and 47 million do not have health insurance.
