London is to get 12 new specialist stroke and trauma centres

    New specialist centres that aim to “radically improve” care of patients in London who have had a stroke or major trauma have been given the go-ahead by a joint committee of London primary care trusts.

    The first of the eight hyperacute stroke centres and four major trauma centres will open next year, and all the new facilities are expected to be in place by summer 2011.

    The centres will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week and will be staffed by consultant led specialist teams who will have access to the best facilities.
