John Forrester Brown Wyper

Dr John Wyper, who died on 8 June 2009, helped thousands of women during a long and distinguished medical career in Aberdeen. He was a consultant in obstetrics and gynaecology with a particular interest in infertility and thus was able to help many northeast women desperately longing for a child. In contrast, by promoting Aberdeen’s family planning service he was instrumental in preventing many an unwanted conception.

He was born in Motherwell in 1915, the son of a general practitioner. He attended Glasgow Academy, where he studied classics, and thereafter he attended Glasgow University as a medical student. At university he won many accolades and medals prior to graduating in 1937.
