Thomas Garrett (“Tom”) was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and went to school in Norwich while his parents were serving as missionaries. He trained at Cambridge and The London Hospital (qualifying in 1969), where he met his wife Penny, a nurse, during house jobs. He then worked in Nigeria with the Church Missionary Society at Wusasa Hospital, Zaria, serving as medical superintendent from 1971 to 1975. It was there, training nurses, midwives, and medical personnel, that he developed his lifelong commitment to medical education.
On returning to England in 1975, he became a principal in general practice in Keynsham, where he worked until retirement in 2002 …
