Roger Benjamin Bowes Bishton was born on 19 February 1932 at Southend-on-Sea, and after schooling in Bromsgrove, he was called up for national service and commissioned in the Royal Artillery. After Downing College, Cambridge, where he obtained a half blue for athletics, he went on to the Middlesex Hospital, qualifying in 1959.
