John Bennett came from Ripley, Derbyshire. He gained a place at Heanor Grammar School and found a passion for mathematics, becoming its first student to go to medical school. After qualifying, he joined the Royal Air Force as a medical officer. He wanted to travel but injury kept him at RAF St Mawgan, Cornwall.
