James Robertson Angus White (“Jim”) was born in Anstruther, Fife, and educated at the Waid Academy and St Andrews University, graduating in 1936. In 1939 he gained the FRCS Edinburgh. At the start of the second world war he worked at Dudley Road Hospital, Birmingham, and during the Midlands Blitz. There he met his wife (Edna Doreen Bates) and married in April 1941.
