Ian Duncan Willatt (“Duncan”) was born in Stoke on Trent on 12 February 1917 and died on 23 March 2009, aged 92. A scholarship at Newcastle under Lyme School was followed by an offer of a place to read medicine at the age of 17 at Edinburgh University. He graduated in 1939 and undertook the role of house physician at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh. He later married Ruth Evershed (obituary, BMJ 2009;338:b2512), a former fellow Edinburgh medical student, on 18 February 1941 at Thakeham, Sussex.
