All general practices must register with regulator by 2012

    From 2012 all 8500 general practices in England will have to be registered with the Care Quality Commission, in line with all other providers of health and social care services.

    The process of regulating the safety and quality of all health and social care services against a single set of registration requirements is already under way. From April it has been a legal requirement for NHS trusts that provide healthcare services directly to patients to register with the commission and show that they comply with requirements on hospital associated infections.
