Born in Manchester on 12 March 1920, Percy Jewsbury attended Manchester Grammar School from the age of 8 until he left to begin his medical training at Manchester University. He gained a joint studentship with the Rockefeller Foundation, arranged by the British and American governments during the second world war. He gained his MD at Minnesota University, returning to England in 1943 to gain his MB ChB (Manchester) in 1944 and the surgical prize.
His original intention was to continue into general surgery at Manchester Royal Infirmary following a broad training under notable professors John Morley, Sir Henry Platt, Sir Geoffrey Jefferson, and O Wangenstein (USA), and a short, valuable spell at Birmingham Accident Hospital, and two years as a graded surgeon in the Royal Army Medical …
