Roy Austen Glover (“Cherry”) was born in Birmingham and educated at King Edward VI Five Ways School, where he was head boy. He started at the local medical school immediately after the second world war, where he met Mary Cooksey, a fellow medical student, who became his future wife. He was known as “Cherry” throughout his time at medical school and for many years thereafter.
