    All my life I have wanted to see the Panama canal, and last week I finally made it and stood, amazed, on the viewing dock above the two-stage Miraflores locks on the Pacific side. Container ships, after a patient wait in the holding area, are guided through the narrow channel by a team of four small silver trains, two on each side, with guy ropes tied to bow and stern.
