Alexander Maitland Rennie was born in 1911 and grew up on the family farm at Wester Fintray in Aberdeenshire. He attended the local school at Fintray and then the grammar school in Aberdeen. He was the dux of the grammar school in 1928. After qualifying MB ChB from Aberdeen University in 1933, he was a house surgeon at the old infirmary at Woolmanhill. He then worked for Naughton Dunn in Birmingham, as well as working at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.
