MPs will be asked to sanction a relaxation of the abortion law to allow specially trained nurses who work in abortion care to carry out early terminations.
The Liberal Democrat MP Evan Harris is tabling an amendment to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill to call for nurses with suitable training to perform early medical and surgical abortions.
Dr Harris said, “The statutory ban on anyone other than doctors carrying out abortions is out of date. Nursing has progressed a great deal since the Abortion Act of 1967.
