Scotland will screen for aortic aneurysm from 2011

    Scotland will screen men older than 65 for abdominal aortic aneurysms.

    The Scottish government is investing £5m (€6m; $10m) over the next three years to establish the programme, which is expected to save about 170 lives a year. It will offer an ultrasound scan to all 65 year old men to determine if they are at risk of a potentially fatal rupture. If an aneurysm is found the patient will be referred for treatment or further surveillance.
