David James Charley was born on the 3 October 1918. He was educated at Taunton School and St Thomas’ Hospital, where he began his medical training in 1937, qualifying in January 1942, initially with the conjoint qualification. A deeply religious man, he had registered as a conscientious objector in May 1939 but was allowed to continue with his medical studies.
