After qualifying at Glasgow University, Donald McColl joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1944 and was posted to Nigeria in West Africa, where he served for 18 months with a final rank of captain.
On his return he did a postgraduate medical course at Glasgow University and then worked in Larkfield Hospital in Greenock, where he obtained a clinical MD. He then worked in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1948.
