Born in Finzean, Aberdeenshire, John George Clarke Munro (“Clarke”) attended Robert Gordon’s College, Aberdeen (1940-4).
He first graduated BSc from the University of Aberdeen in 1947. Following national service in the Royal Air Force (shortened after qualifying as a pilot), he entered medical school in Aberdeen, qualifying MB ChB in 1954. Throughout his university career, he excelled in athletics and rugby, representing the university in both sports over several years.
