After qualifying, Philip Arthur Wilkinson worked as a house surgeon at Guy’s Hospital and the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary and as senior house surgeon at Harlow Wood before joining the Royal Air Force in 1937. He was posted to RAF Hospital Aden, flying with No 8 Squadron in Vincents. On 3 January 1940 he married Margery Swales, who was in Princess Mary’s Royal Air Force Nursing Service.
