John Anthony Seymour-Jones was born on the 7 April 1911 in Birmingham. His father was an ear, nose, and throat surgeon. After attending Shrewsbury Public School, he won a classics scholarship to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, but later read natural sciences so that he could enter medicine.
