Average earnings before tax of GPs in the United Kingdom fell in 2006-7 by 2.1% from the previous year, to £107 667 (€136 367; $185 241), says a report published this week.
An analysis of tax returns by the NHS Information Centre found that the average gross earnings of GPs on the general medical services (GMS) or primary medical services (PMS) contract rose by 1% to £247 362 in 2006-7. However, this rise was more than offset by the 3.5% increase in the cost of running a practice, with average expenses rising to £139 694 for the year.
