Roger Patrick Docherty was born on 12 May 1932 in Coleraine, County Derry, and later went to boarding school at St George’s College in Weybridge. Many friendships which began there and in the holidays continued throughout all his years, as did those that began after joining Barts to study medicine in 1951.
On qualifying MB BS in 1956, he became the house surgeon on the professorial unit and shortly after began his national service with a short service commission in the Royal Navy.
