I first met Mr M four years ago during a teaching session to medical students. He had had diabetes for 75 years and was attending the outpatient clinic for a plantar foot ulcer. His diabetes was diagnosed at the age of 3 years in 1929. Although insulin was first used in humans in 1922, it was expensive and only became widely available in the mid-1930s.
