FDA asks Congress for more funds: Andrew von Eschenbach, commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration, has said that the agency needs $275m (£140m; €175m) more each year to ensure that imported drugs, medical devices, and foods are safe. The US has had problems recently with heparin for human use imported from China. President Bush asked for a$51m increase, but the FDA said this was not enough to cover higher costs.
