Prevalence of pre-existing diabetes in pregnancy doubled in seven years in a Californian population

    The prevalence of pre-existing diabetes in pregnancy doubled during the seven years from 1999 to 2005 in a large study of an ethnically diverse population in California (Diabetes Care 2008;899-904; doi: 10.2337/dc07-2345).

    Prevalence doubled for women aged 20-39 years and increased fivefold for teenagers in that time. Women aged 40 or more had a small but significant increase in prevalence of pre-existing diabetes.
