Thomas Anderson McAllister (“Tom”) had a distinguished undergraduate career and, after qualification, trained in bacteriology in Professor (later Sir) James Howie’s department in the Western Infirmary in Glasgow. A research fellowship with Professor Ed Kass in Boston kindled his early interest in urinary tract infection, and this was followed by research on the use of hyperbaric oxygen in anaerobic infection.
