Peter was the only child of Arthur, a weaving shed manager, and Annie, a canteen worker. He attended Morley Grammar School, where he was interested in botany but was advised to study medicine and won a scholarship to Leeds Medical School, qualifying in 1957.
Through his love of the natural world he met his first wife Shirley, a schoolteacher, at the Batley Naturalist Society. They had five children.
