Brought up in Liverpool in his father's practice, John Belcher was the ninth generation doctor (father to son) in the family. He was educated at Epsom College and thence St Thomas's Hospital Medical School from 1935 to 1939, graduating MRCS LRCP still aged 21, having asked for an early viva, and then MB BS.
