Educated in Wolverhampton, Arthur Marshall narrowly avoided joining the Kenyan police force by winning the Frank Fletcher scholarship to Birmingham Medical School, worth £100 a year for five years. After completing house jobs he volunteered for the Royal Navy in 1939 and was working in obstetrics in Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham, when he was called up in 1940.
