    If the current move towards the creation of digital libraries is to be successful, solutions have to be found to reconcile the principle of copyright of material with the aim of making knowledge accessible to as many people as possible.

    The concept of a European digital library is still being fine tuned. But the aim is to ensure easy public online access from anywhere in the European Union, possibly through a single portal, to the increasing volume of works that individual national libraries are storing in digital form.
