The government has denied accusations that it allowed a “spectacular failure” in NHS workforce planning to happen.
In a session of the parliamentary health select committee last week the Department of Health's minister for quality, Philip Hunt, and government officials claimed that problems with workforce levels are set to improve in the next year, despite current cutbacks in staff numbers.
MPs on the committee tackled Lord Hunt and Department of Health officials on their track record as part of the committee's last session of evidence in its inquiry into workforce planning.
