Alfred Beck was a consultant surgeon in Cardiff. He was born in Uhersky Brod, in Moravia (now part of the Czech Republic), on 28 January 1912 into a prominent Jewish family which included rabbis and businessmen.
Motivated by idealistic feelings, he resolved at an early age to become a doctor, and he qualified in Prague in 1935, at the Charles University.
