NHS patients in England will be able opt out of a controversial national medical records system, the government has said.
The government's U turn comes after growing concerns about the risks to patients' privacy when their medical details are transferred to a national NHS system. After a task force that was set up to investigate the new system expressed similar fears in its report, health minister Norman Warner said on 18 December that the Department of Health would allow concerned patients to opt out of the summary care record system.
