Three quarters of AIDs deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa: Sub-Saharan Africa still bears the brunt of the HIV and AIDS pandemic, says a report from the joint United Nations agency for HIV and AIDS. UNAIDs says that almost two thirds of new infections in 2006 occurred there, but the areas with the most striking recent increases were East Asia, Central Asia, and Eastern Europe. About 40 million people worldwide are now HIV positive. See www.unaids.org.
