Former consultant microbiologist Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, Fife (b Perth 1923; q Edinburgh 1946), died from heart failure on 21 June 2006.
John Calder's undergraduate career was interrupted by war service in the Royal Navy, in which he lost some hearing acuity. After periods in orthopaedic surgery and general practice in Edinburgh, he trained in microbiology, and was appointed consultant microbiologist at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy. John served an apprenticeship with a local clock repairer and eventually became an antique clock maker and repairer. Predeceased by his wife, Ella, he leaves a daughter and two grandsons.
