Peter Harvey was born in Birmingham but grew up in Manchester, where he went to medical school. He was appointed consultant pathologist at Blackpool in 1954 at an early age but moved to be head of the department in Lancaster in 1963. In addition to building up a modern department with the various subspecialties, Peter became progressively interested in the application of computing to pathology services when this was a new area. He was treasurer of the first international congress of the European Federation of Medical Informatics at Cambridge in 1978 and read papers at a number of international meetings. In all, he published over 30 papers. He leaves a wife, Margaret; three children; and four grandchildren.
