Peter Alan De Raeve
Formerly general practitioner Stowmarket, Suffolk (b 1923, q University College Hospital, London, 1952), died from metastatic prostate carcinoma on 15 February 2006.
Born in Whitechapel, Peter enrolled in the Royal Air Force after leaving school and served as a navigator for Bomber Command, flying numerous dangerous missions. After demobilisation he studied medicine at University College Hospital, London, and joined a practice in Leicester, where he developed his interest in obstetrics and gynaecology. In 1962 he and his young family moved to Ararat near Melbourne, Australia (his father was Australian), but returned to England in 1968 to practise in Stowmarket, Suffolk, where he continued to enjoy rural life. He quickly established a reputation as a caring and understanding doctor popular with patients, colleagues, and staff, achieving the accolade of being the "doctors’ doctor." Always keen to innovate and improve services, he and his colleagues developed the first health centre in Suffolk bringing all the primary health care team together. He was an inspirational teacher and one of the first GP trainers for the Ipswich VTS, itself one of the earliest schemes in the country. In his spare time he was a keen and knowledgeable gardener and was never happier than when tending his vegetables or entertaining colleagues and friends in his delightful garden. He retired in 1988, moving to Oxford to be nearer his family. Here he continued to do locum work and develop more interests, including the history of medicine, achieving an MA in 1996, as well as bookbinding, the theatre, and astronomy. Despite failing health over the last year and several operations, he bore his final illness with great fortitude. He is survived by Rosemary, their two children, and three grandchildren.
