Joan Ellen Maude Watts (née Lambert)
Former consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Barking and King George V Hospitals, London (b 1918; q Royal Free Hospital 1943; FRCOG), died from cerebrovascular disease on 27 March 2006.Joan Ellen Maude Watts (née Lambert) graduated from the London School of Medicine for Women in 1943. She was consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist to King George V Hospital, Ilford, and Barking Hospital. Her early posts included house physician and house surgeon at the Royal Buckingham Hospital, Aylesbury, and house officer and registrar posts at the Mother’s Hospital, Clapton, South London Hospital for Women, and Nottingham Women’s Hospital. Joan was involved in the early development of modern treatment for Rhesus incompatibility with the late Dr Helen Mackay. She was an expert obstetrician and gynaecologist with a special interest and skill in difficult obstetric manoeuvres in the days before caesarean section was as widely practised as it is at present. Latterly she expressed the opinion that the current caesarean section rate was unnecessarily high. She was highly regarded by colleagues for her clinical skills and judgement.
Joan was by nature a kind, sympathetic, and skilful doctor in the broadest sense. Her passing will sadden the many women for whom she cared and who were helped by her skills. In her retirement she was devoted to creating a beautiful much loved garden at her home in Highgate. She leaves a husband (Richard, a consultant physician), a son (also Richard, a consultant rheumatologist), daughter-in-law (Lesley), and two grandchildren (Oliver and Isobel). She will be widely missed. [Richard W E Watts, Richard A Watts]
