Born Kurt Joachim Dietrich Karl Julius Saalfeld, Dieter grew up in Berlin. He was permitted to study medicine in Leipzig as his mother was Aryan, but the Nazis prevented him from sitting finals as his father was Jewish. He escaped, unqualified, to the United Kingdom in 1938 and was interned. In 1945 he attained a BSc in psychology and worked as a clinical psychologist. Dieter returned to Leipzig in 1949 to take his medical finals. In the 1950s he trained in psychiatry, becoming consultant psychiatrist in Sedgefield and in 1955 the consultant child psychiatrist for Derby-shire. He leaves four children from his first marriage and three children from his second marriage.
