Former consultant anaesthetist Waveney Hospital, Ballymena (b Pittsburgh 1916; q Queen's University, Belfast, 1939; FFA RCS), died from complications of bulbar palsy on 3 October 2005.

Charles worked in general practice before serving as a medical officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve from 1941 to 1946. Having developed an interest in anaesthetics, he trained at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, becoming principal registrar and tutor. As the first specialist anaesthetist appointed to the Mid Antrim Group of Hospitals he developed the service single handed for many years. He retired in 1981. He leaves Rita, his wife of 63 years; three children; and six grandchildren.
