General practitioner Long Eaton (b 1958; q Glasgow 1981), died from oesophageal cancer on 28 December 2005.

Iain was born into a medical family in Ayrshire, his great great uncle being Sir Alexander Fleming. After house jobs in the west of Scotland, Iain worked in a variety of posts and specialties, having little interest in the medical career structure. Eventually he settled into general practice in Long Eaton, where he was particularly known for his care of patients with cancer and their families. Away from work his passions were his garden, nature, working with wood, sailing, and his BMW coupe.

[Stewart Pringle]
