John Morley Davies
Former general practitioner Herefordshire (b 1931; q Birmingham 1954), d 12 December 2005.After house jobs in Birmingham John joined the army, becoming acting major. He entered general practice with his wife, Hilary, née Evans, in 1957, taking over her father’s practice in Smethwick. With another partner, they soon opened a branch surgery in Halesowen, and this expanded with the subsequent closure of the Smethwick surgery. Increasing urbanisation caused them to move to Weobley, in rural Herefordshire, in 1969, where they built a thriving practice and continued to work until their retirement in 1991.
A lifelong lover of the country, John was a skilled horseman, and pivotal member of the local hunt. He had a huge knowledge of rural matters and, as Weobley tree warden, personally planted hundreds of specimen trees locally, and used the opportunity to discuss farming methods with farmers. He served as chairman on several village committees, including the building of the village hall, and Friends of Weobley Church. He sailed extensively in the Mediterranean and Scottish waters, and was also an opera buff. He died from carcinomatosis, following 12 years of steroid and cytotoxic therapy. Hilary predeceased him in 2001. He leaves a son, Toby (a GP), a daughter, and six granddaughters. [Brian Beach]
